MISSION 06 / DESKS
Your desk has enough tabs open.
Create a work surface, not a museum of unfinished tasks.
01 Your mission
Make room for the work you do today. Choose the main working area and clear that first. You do not need to reorganize every document, download, and cable to earn a usable patch of desk.
02 Define three zones
Use an active zone for your current task, a nearby zone for daily tools, and a separate holding zone for items requiring action. A notebook can serve as the task list. Paper sitting in the holding zone needs an action and a review time, otherwise it becomes a passive-aggressive paper sculpture.
03 Keep essentials close
Put the tools you use repeatedly within easy reach. Move seldom-used supplies to another shelf or drawer. Test this for a normal workday before buying an organizer. A large desktop caddy can consume more working space than the items it gathers.
04 Route cables with slack
Identify each cable before bundling it. Keep enough slack for normal movement and access to connections. Follow equipment and cable instructions, avoid tight bends, and do not run cords where they will be pinched or create a trip hazard. Reusable ties can make later changes easier than permanent bundles.
05 End with a restart plan
At the end of a work session, write one sentence about what comes next. Return daily tools to their places and move loose paper to its assigned destination. You are preparing for the next start, not completing all work in the known universe.
06 Stopping point
Your current task fits on the surface and you know where tomorrow begins. If cables still drift, consider clips suited to the desk’s surface; if paper persists, improve the action system before adding another tray.
Measure before buying and make room for normal use.
