MISSION 05 / SMALL SPACES

Under the sink, above the chaos.

Make the plumbing part of the plan.

By Mission: Sort of Together · Published October 14, 2026

01 Your mission

Arrange an awkward cabinet so its contents are accessible and leaks remain visible. The space beneath a sink is interrupted by pipes, valves, and sometimes a disposal unit. Treat those interruptions as fixed constraints, not a puzzle to solve by forcing a shelf into place.

02 Inspect before organizing

Empty the area enough to inspect it. If you see dampness, damage, or an active leak, address that before storing items there. Keep access to shutoff valves clear. Do not put shelving pressure on pipes or wedge objects against connections.

03 Map the obstacles

Measure the door opening, each usable side, and the height below the lowest obstruction. Sketch the pipes as blocked-out areas. Measure both shelves of a proposed organizer; the upper basket may collide with plumbing even when its base fits.

04 Group by task

Keep cleaning supplies in their original labeled containers and follow their storage directions. Do not mix chemicals or transfer them into look-alike food containers. Store hazardous products securely away from children and pets. A pull-out basket can improve access but does not make unsafe storage safe.

05 Protect access and visibility

Use small removable groups rather than one dense wall of products. Place frequently used items toward the front. Leave a clear view of the cabinet floor where practical so moisture is easier to spot. If a liner is used, check underneath it periodically rather than assuming it prevents water damage.

06 Stopping point

You can reach the valves and retrieve one bottle without moving five others. Buy storage only after measuring around the plumbing. The pipes have seniority.

Next mission, if you want one.

Measure before buying and make room for normal use.
